Edgware
left it late to take all three points at Aylesbury Vale this afternoon,
in a match were chances were at a premium, it was a tale of two
penalties that would decide the match for the Edgware writes Gavin Shaw.
Conditions were made difficult with a very strong wind blowing down the
pitch, and the Wares started with the wind at their backs. Although they
enjoying a large amount of possession, they failed to break down a
determined home defense.
Edgware were given a great chance to take the lead when on 22 minutes
they were awarded a penalty after Ben Hayden was fouled inside the box,
Edgware’s leading scorer Richard Morton stepped forward to take the
kick, but surprisingly sent the ball wide of the goal.
The next best chance the visitors had of taking the lead was when Greg
Ngoyi hit the post in the final minute of the first half, but the sides
went in at the interval goalless.
The
second half saw Edgware continue to push forward with Gavin Hart
creating openings with his runs down the right wing.
The home side countered on occasion, and were still providing a stubborn
obstacle to break down but to be fair neither side were really offering
too much in terms of goalmouth chances, although Edgware were always the
more likely of the two sides to break the deadlock. Stuart Blackburne
who had replaced Greg Ngoyi at the interval, was a thorn in the side of
the home defenders and it was Blackburne who came closest to scoring
when he saw his shot superbly saved by Lee Adams in the home goal.
With six minutes remaining, it looked like Edgware would have to settle
for the draw and drop precious promotion points, then the quick fire
Blackburne made a darting run inside the area only to be brought down
handing the 'Wares' their second chance from the spot; Morton handed
responsibility over to Vince Rispoli, and he sent his shot low to the
right hand corner, and though the keeper dived the right way, the ball
nestled in the back of the net to give the 'Wares' the lead.
Edgware
saw out the remaining minutes and recorded a very important victory that
was all about the 3 points gained rather the then performance.
With second placed Hertford Town winning 7-0 at Royston and Harefield
beating St Magretsbury by 2-0, the table remains the same, with Edgware
leading by 11 points, however Harefield have 3 matches in hand, that
should they win would leave them just 4 points behind the table topping
Wares.
Edgware are back in action next Saturday when they host Royston Town,
With Harefield United due to play on Tuesday and Thursday, we should
have a clearer view of just what is needed in the remaining 6 matches
for Edgware to win the league.
