A comfortable win against Biggleswade United and with second placed Harefield beaten 2 – 0 by third placed Hertford this afternoon Edgware need just 3 more points from their last three games to lift the Spartan League title, so a win against Chalfont St Peter on Tuesday night will see them through.
Edgware started well, Stuart Blackburne’s cross was lifted inches over the home goal by Richard Morton in the first few minutes and it was Morton’s cross from a long throw by Vince Rispoli that gave Greg Ngoyi a chance that was defended wide.
Gavin Hart was making some telling runs at the Biggleswade defense and just before the 10 minute mark he set Morton up for a shot but the midfielder hit the ball wide. For the first 20 minutes of the game Adam Lawrence, in the home goal, was kept extremely busy as the Wares probed for an opening.
Biggleswade did made a break out with Robbie O’Dell giving Sam Brown a sight of goal but his shot was well over Darren Bonfields crossbar and on the counter Paul Marks was forced wide when he scythed through the midfield to run at goal.
It was only a few minutes from the end of the first half that Edgware took the lead. After they had forced a succession of corners, Johnny Moore was brought down in the area and Morton put the ball into the back of the net from the spot.
Edgware started the second period as they had finished the first, Morton headed over from a Vince Rispoli corner and Blackburne hit the bar within the first minutes. Edgware captain Rory Smith’s defenders were marshalling any attack the home side tried to press and Marks, Moore and Morton were outstanding in midfield.
On the hour Wares brought on Adam Wallace for Greg Ngoyi and the big striker was immediately in the action, stewarding the ball in for Moore to shot but the lithe midfielder was off target. It was at this point that Biggleswade’s Jack Weeden was allowed to strike at goal, forcing Bonfield into a spectacular dive low to his right to keep the ball out.
This acted as a wake up call for the visitors and another Rispoli corner was acrobatically turned back into goal by Wallace for Blackburne to head in with 70 minutes gone.
Rispoli had a chance when the visitors were awarded a free kick a couple of feet outside the area after Marks was pulled back when through on goal, but his strike hit the wall. However, a few minutes before the final whistle Wallace, shrugging off his markers, made it 3 with a crashing shot, to put the game out of sight for his team.
The celebration of the many traveling supporters was further increased when the score at Harfield was shouted to the crowd.
