Edgware reached their first final for 10 years, with a resounding
victory over Broxbourne Borough at the White Lion Ground tonight. In
what was at times a bruising encounter, the 'Wares' played the more
assured football, and were deserved winners writes Gavin Shaw
The 'Wares' went a goal down when Mark Buchanan headed a cross into his
own goal from the Broxbourne right with just over 35 minutes gone. The
home side did not let this setback affect them, and 5 minutes later were
back on level terms when Ben Cain's shot beat the keeper from distance,
the teams went in all square at the break in what was a tight first 45
minutes.
The second period saw Edgware get on top of their opponents, and a
penalty was awarded after Mark Buchanan was felled in the penalty area,
Richard Morton made no mistake from the spot to give the 'Wares' a 2-1
lead and score his 30th goal of the season a minute past the hour mark.
Broxbourne had tested Rob Blackburne in the home goal several times, but
he was on good form, making one excellent save in particular, when he
turned the ball round the post.
Paul Marks created the third goal, running into the area and delivering
an inch perfect pass to new signing Greg Ngoyi, who tucked the chance
away to score on his debut, 35 minutes into the second half and then
added his second of the night and Edgware's fourth with a well taken
solo effort 5 minutes later.
Richard Morton was sent off in what looked like a very harsh decision
after an altercation with Broxbourne Captain Ross Edwards, who was also
shown red, with only a few minutes to the final whistle
The win takes Edgware into the final of the Spartan South Midlands
Premier cup, where they will face Oxhey jets, at a venue and date to be
announced.
