 Spartan South Midlands League

Having taken just one point from their previous two home league matches, Edgware returned to winning ways at the White Lion Ground this afternoon writes Gavin Shaw

The Wares were without injured strikers Adam Wallace and Greg Ngoyi, however, this seasons leading scorer Richard Morton returned from suspension, having been sent off against today's visitors Broxbourne in the Premier Division Cup Semi Final played here at the White Lion on 20th February.

Edgware started the match brightly and forced several corners, in a lively first quarter of an hour. Richard Morton had his shot blocked when he fired at goal from a tight angle following a cross from Paul Marks and the Wares appeal for hand ball were ignored when Gavin Harts forceful shot was clearly palmed out by a defender.

Gazmund Dhuti handled the ball just outside the visitor’s area and this time referee Mr Crawford saw the infringement and awarded a free kick, Mortons rasping shot rebounded off the crossbar but there was no home player following up.

Edgware were playing some neat football and when Ben Haydens pass sent Stuart Blackburne racing into the penalty only for Adam Norman to upend him leaving the referee with no choice but to award the 'Wares' a penalty, the resulting kick was duly dispatched by Morton 24 minutes into the first half.

Broxbourne were quick on the counter attack, and Rob Blackburne was tested on several occasions but never unduly worried, as the 'Wares' lead at the interval by the single goal goal.

The second period saw Edgware play some exciting football, specially in the first 20 minutes, Paul Marks and Johnny Moore in midfield were behind a lot of good work for the 'Wares' with the pace of Gavin Hart down the right flank causing the visiting defenders problems all afternoon.

Stuart Blackburne nearly pulled off a wonder goal when noticing the keeper off his line, attempted an audacious lob from well within his own half, which just went narrowly wide. Edgware were nearly caught off guard by Broxbourne who had a chance to draw level but the Edgware backline performed admirably all afternoon.

Paul Killick replaced Stuart Blackburne late in the game and made an instant impact when after good work from Marks he waltzed into the Broxbourne area and slid the ball into the net for the second goal of the match a few minutes before the end sealing the points for the Wares.

With second placed Hertford Town being held at home by Chalfont St Peter, Edgware's lead at the top of the table is extended to 10points with a match in hand.

Edgware are in action on Tuesday night when Biggleswade Town are the visitors,
