The process of erasing the despair at
the White Lion ground caused by last Tuesday's FA Vase defeat began on
Saturday when Edgware resumed Spartan League duties and hit London
Colney for six, writes John Comfort.
In the early stages they still appeared to be suffering the after
effects of the Whitehawk game but, after taking the lead on the half
hour, they never looked back and went on to give their confidence a
significant boost with what, in the end, turned out to be a
comprehensive victory .
Lowly Colney proved to more than a match for Edgware in that opening
period, except when it came to finishing, as Jake Parrat proved early on
when he got clear but, with only Rob Blackburne to beat, shot tamely at
the keeper.
Stuart Blackburne fired wide from close in, and Paul Killick was just
off target with a rising drive, as Edgware began to get their act
together and, in the 30th minute, they went ahead following a sublime
move.
Junior Lewis and Paul Marks were both involved in the build up before
Richard Morton set Adam Wallace free on the right and he burst into the
Colney area before beating keeper Dominic Spong with a low angled shot
into the far corner of the net.
Right on half time Wares made it 2-0, Morton putting Stuart Blackburne
through to draw Spong and then lay the ball off for Killick to fire
home.
Edgware dominated the second half and a third goal eight minutes after
the restart effectively wrapped up the points.
Great work on the right by Wallace, who waltzed round a succession of
defenders, ended with him putting over a fierce low cross, which
cannoned off Colney defender Darren Gibb at the far post into his own
net.
On 58 minutes it was 4-0 when Killick exchanged passes with Marks before
firing past Spong, and Ben Cain headed a fifth for Edgware on 76 minutes
from Lewis's pinpoint cross following a quickly taken free kick by Phil
Kane.
Colney were reduced to 10 men with six minutes to go when they had
defender Jason Beck sent off, though his dismissal was a little belated
and referee Walshe's priorities clearly questionable. Beck, already
booked for bringing down Stuart Blackburne in the first half, walked
after getting a second yellow for the somewhat trivial offence of
tossing the ball away after being adjudged to have committed a foul
throw. Fifteen minutes earlier the defender had got little more than a
rebuke from Mr Walshe for a dreadful tackle on Killick which alone was
worthy of a straight red.
Edgware completed the rout a minute into stoppage time when Wallace's
clever backheel on the right kept the ball in play and set up Killick
for a cross from which Ross Christie's goalbound shot was saved, and Ben
Cain fired home the loose ball.
Edgware: R Blackburne, Killick, Kane, Fernee, Lewis, Gardner,
Marks, Morton (McCluskey), S Blackburne (Cain), Wallace, Hart
(Christie).
Other subs: Hayden, Rispoli.
