Champions Edgware played their final home match in the Spartan League at the White Lion Ground this season and ran out 4-0 winners against Leverstock Green this afternoon. A much more confident performance without the pressures imposed in the run in to the title and with only one more game to play the prospect of notching up 100 plus points, writes Gavin Shaw.
Greg Ngoyi, scored Edgware's quickest goal of the season, when he struck on just eleven seconds, to give the Champions a 1-0 lead, Ngoyi won the ball down the right flank, he cut inside the area and sent the ball crashing in at the far post. Edgware almost made it two 15 minutes later when Ngoyi and Stuart Blackburne combined for Blackburne to fire the ball into the area but if went past all the players packing the box.
The referee, Mr Taverner, denied a clear penalty appeal when Ngoyi was brought down in the box and Blackburne headed over when Phil Kane’s jinxing run down the left set him up. Edgware played some attractive football throughout the first half, but failed to add to their quick fire lead as the sides went in at the break. Stuart Blackburne doubled the Wares lead when his shot from inside the box beat Lee Clark in the visitors goal, 7 minutes from the restart. Edgware were now in full command of the game and Darren Bonfield was rarely called upon to make any sort of save. Good work by Ngoyi and Adam Wallace, both running rings around their markers, gave Blackburne a header which Clark was lucky to tip over and the referee again denied a penalty appeal when Blackburne was tipped up in the area before the hour was up. Ben Hayden added a third for Edgware 5 minutes past the hour mark, latching onto a good cross from Gavin Hart and finishing well from close range; Stuart Blackburne nearly had his second of the game when he saw his dipping shot from distance crash against the crossbar and rebound out into play 73 minutes in. Adil Salih, coming on as sub after spending a lot of the season out injured, was showing his heals to the defenders on the right wing and Cain was unfortunate not to connect to the speedy wingers cross into the area on 80 minutes. Steve Brady replaced Blackburne with 15 minutes left and he made an instant impact, getting himself booked for what looked like an innocuous offence, seconds later Brady had his name on the score sheet. Richard Morton stepped up to take a free kick from 6 yards outside the area and although he beat the wall his shot rebounded off the post to Brady, who sent the ball past a diving Clark from just inside the box, Brady's joy was short-lived as the referee sent him off moments later after an exchange of words with Leverstock Captain, Alan Arthur following his goal celebrations, all in the space of five crazy minutes. Following the match Edgware were presented with the Spartan South Midlands League Championship Shield by League representative John Thompson who will attend the Presentation Night on 12th May to present the players medals. Edgware complete their SSML fixtures when they travel to Langford next Saturday.
