Edgware Town (2)3 – Royston Town (0)1
Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Edgware did enough to collect all the points against bottom of the league Royston Town today although when the ‘Crows’ scored a goal back early in the second half, after going two down in the first, they upped their game and made the Wares fight for the win.

The first game between the two teams, in early February, was a goal feast with Edgware winning 8 goals to 4 this game was played in appalling conditions on a very muddy pitch, what a contrast today, with bright spring sunshine and a pitch in excellent condition thanks to the hard work of our grounds man Colin Hiskey.

Edgware started well and won a number of free kicks against their over zealous opponents. Stuart Blackburne used his pace to latch on to one of these and although he zipped the ball across the face of goal their was nobody following in to capitalize 7 minutes in. Edgware continued to press but struggled to find an opening.

Phil Kane was full of running on the left and just before the quarter hour mark he combined with Adam Wallace to give the big forward a chance which he pulled just wide on 23 minutes. Wallace was however instrumental in the Wares first goal, crossing in for Stuart Blackburne to net the ball just before the half hour mark.

Edgware scored their second five minutes later when Blackburne found Richard Morton in the area, although facing away from goal the tall midfielder spun on his heel and thrashed the ball past the hapless Ken Kamata in the visitors goal.

Wallace headed wide and Ben Hayden had a shot turned behind by a defender before the end of the first half but the Wares could not extend their lead.

It was 10 minutes into the second period that Royston were given a life line, the ‘Crows’ Captain Lee Rogers broke through the midfield and set up substitute Greg Jackson to shot from close in giving Rob Blackburne no chance, to make the score line more respectable at 2 – 1.

The goal seemed to give the visitors a boost and a couple of minutes from the re-start Blackburne, in the home goal, had to tip over a good effort from Bradley Jackson.

Morton set Gavin Hart free down the right on the hour but again his cross went begging with no attacker in the area. The Edgware management tried to liven up the action by substituting Wallace for Ben Cain and Ben Hayden for Darren Butler but the Wares were a little weak in midfield with Paul Marks suspended and Johnny Moore unavailable.

Butler had a shot pushed out by Kamata and although he was first to the rebound the goalkeeper was back in place to collect his second effort with 25 minutes of the second half gone. It was now difficult to see where the home team were going to get another goal to kill off the match.

With 10 minutes left Greg Ngoyi came on in place of Kane and he was immediately in the action, his powerful shot cannoning out for a corner off a defender.

With a few minutes left on the watch Stuart Blackburne tricked his way into the area only to be body checked to the floor. Referee Mr McKay pointed to the spot and Morton made it 3 for his team in what was almost the final kick of the game.
