Edgware won their last game of the season at a canter, beating Langford 4 - 0. The score could have been many more with the chances the Wares had and Rob Blackburne in the Wares goal had an easy afternoon. Edgware rested a number of first team players obviously mindful of the 2 cup games to be played in the next 10 days.
The 3 point means that the Wares have notched up 102 points this season from 40 games giving them an average of 2.55 points per game, the highest ever in the history of the league.
Edgware started well and when Vince Rispoli centred the ball from the left Ben Hayden’s header went wide 7 minutes in. New boy Densal Davidson, who impressed throughout, scored the first goal for the visitors on 10 minutes, after he latched on to a through ball from Paul Marks, the feisty midfielder having taken the captains armband for the day and although only playing the first hour before being substituted, he was my ‘Man of the Match’.
Home keeper Dan Eely was lucky to back pedal and tip over Rispoli’s audacious lob from the half way line before Davidson and Marks combined to set Ben Hayden up to score Edgware’s second 7 minutes after the first. Minutes later Marks had an effort well saved by the keeper and after Adam Wallace was fouled just outside the box Mark’s quick free kick was only inches over the top corner of the goal with 24 minutes gone.
Langford’s attempts at breaking out really did not amount to much with the Wares back line, even without skipper Rory Smith, too strong for them. Before the break Ben Cain headed against the crossbar, Wallace had a shot saved by the keeper, Marks shot wide and Davidson had a shot turned behind.
Edgware continued the onslaught in the second period, Phil Kane attacked the home side right flank and his cross found Wallace lurking on the edge of the area, only for the big forward to see his shot palmed behind by Eely, who was on excellent form and had already prevented the Wares from scoring a number of goals. It was the keeper again who stopped Cain’s volley with his feet, but he finally succumbed when Rispoli’s corner was flicked on by Hayden for Wallace to net from close in with 23 minutes of the second half gone.
Substitute Ross Christie gave Johnny Moore a chance 2 minutes later with an incisive cross but his shot shaved the crossbar and when Cain ran through the home defence his shot was tipped over the bar.
Kane, again making ground on the left, crossed in for Moore to make it 4 with 87 minutes gone, really putting the game out of sight for the home team.
Super Sub Steve Newing, had replaced Wallace in the last quarter of an hour and although he had set up a number of chances for his team mates his moment of glory came when he stepped up to take a penalty after Phil Kane was brought down in the box minutes before the final whistle. Unfortunately his thunderous kick was turned away by an acrobatic dive from Eely. I have never before seen joint manager Del Deanus grin at a missed chance!
