The scoreline belies the performance of a strong Aveley side and with more clinical finishing they could have done better although the home side did make the Wares work hard for the three points.
In the first minutes Rory Smith had to make a strong tackle to deny the ‘Millers’ Ryan Imbert any chance of breaching the Wares back line and Junior Lewis turned defense into attack making a long clearance that was latched onto by Greg Ngoyi but he headed the ball just inches over the crossbar with 10 minutes gone. Four minutes later the Wares took the lead, A Gavin Hart corner landed in the box amongst a melee of players and Jason Ferneé forced the ball past Ronnie Worster in the home goal.
The remainder of the half was attack and counter, with Edgware’s big Darren Bonfield by far the busier keeper. Aveley’s Ainsley Gasper and Davey Armstrong were combining well in attack but their finishing was woeful and Smiths back line held firm.
The second half was much the same as the first and it wasn’t until new signing Fabio Valenti came on 56 minutes in that the Wares started to show some more inventive play. Following Ferneé’s long throw the ball was flicked into the centre where Valenti spun and crashed the ball in for Edgware’s second five minutes past the hour.
Valenti also had a hand in Edgware’s third, a long cross in from the right wing found Lewis unmarked and he headed past the hapless Worster with 69 minutes on the clock.
Aveley tried to up the anti, a free kick 10 yards outside the area was put over the bar by Armstrong and when Shahed Ahmed tried to jinx his way into the area Paul Marks was snapping at his heals, the feisty midfielder winning the ball back and clearing his lines. Man of the match Ferneé was impressive throughout.
This was not one of Edgware’s best performances and it was not pretty to watch, but 3 more goals to our account, another clean sheet and 3 more points in the bag to keep Edgware top of the table.
EDGWARE: Bonfield, Davidson(Valenti), Hart(Marks), Smith, Lewis, Ferneé, White, Moore, Ngoyi, Cain(S Blackburne), Maharjan.
OTHER SUBS: Ingham, Stopps.
