This was always going to be a tight game with fellow promotion contenders Bury Town, although the home side had only won one game, at home against Arlesey Town, since the teams drew at the White Lion at the end of November.

The game started at pace with first the visitors then the home team conceding corners in the first few minutes. Rob Blackburne, in the Wares goal, made a confident save when Lee Reed set up Scott Chaplin for a shot, although the ball was straight at him.

Gavin Hart, commanding the right wing, robbed the ball from the feet of Lee Smith but his pass forward was too strong and then, before 10 minutes had been played, the Wares should really have taken the lead when Densil Davidson passed through to Richard Morton, the big midfielder crossed in for Adam Wallace in front of goal, the ball glanced off the strikers outstreached boot, only to hit the post and rebound to safety.

Lee Reed had another chance but hit the ball at Blackburne’s feet before Johnny Moore was forced to head off the line from a Bury corner 18 minutes in then when Paul Marks won a free kick 15 yards outside the home area Morton blasted into the wall and Wallace was unlucky when he collected the rebound but fired well over.

The Wares keeper made probably the best save of his season when Chaplin fired at goal from fully 30 yards out, the athletic keeper diving to his left and pushing the ball round the bottom of the post with 25 minutes gone.

The Wares started to apply pressure to the Bury defence with some good passing moves through midfield and Wallace with fellow striker Kevin Chakaodza were combining well in front of goal but the final ball seemed to let them down. Before the end of the first half Wallace missed a sitter and Morton saw another thunderbolt strike a defender and go wide.

The second half was really a repeat of the first with neither side forcing an advantage, Wallace passed in to Chakaodza but he shot over and Morton fired wide in the first minutes. However, it was Morton’s shot from the edge of the area, 15 minutes before the end, that Dean Greygoose somehow pushed over the bar which showed that last years top scorer was on his way back after only his second start this season.

Injuries and sickness are still taking their toll on the Wares but it appears that whatever the lineup at the back they are not conceding goals. If only they could convert the many chances they create in front of goal they would have an easier ride through the second half of the season. League fixtures against Ware, Enfield Town, Canvey Island and Maldon Town face the team before the end of the month as well as two Middlesex Cup quarter finals against Northwood and AFC Hayes.
