This hotly contested league game was decided by just one goal, Ben Hayden scoring from the penalty spot after Matt Stace handled the ball in the box just 10 minutes in writes Paul Gregory.
AFC Sudbury were by far the best side that the Wares have faced this season and it was obvious from the start that both sides came to the White Lion to play football.
Although the visitors had the better of the exchanges in the first few minutes the early goal settled the home side and on balance the Wares had the better of the first half. The home side nearly doubled their lead when a well worked corner taken by Gavin Hart was passed up field to Densil Davidson lurking by the half way line, his first time cross was meet by Stuart Blackburne out jumping the defenders but his powerful header rebounded off the crossbar just past the half hour mark.
Blackburne had a second chance trying to chip the advancing keeper, Nathan Munson, but saw the ball go agonizingly wide. Greg Ngoyi had a shot blocked, Hayden headed just over the bar and Denis Maharjan shot wide as the Wares continued to press for a second. Ben Hayden, Junior Lewis and Wares skipper Rory Smith were kept busy by the ‘Yellows’ forwards but held firm and Darren Bonfield in the home goal was only called on to make one real save, turning Simon Heads shot behind for a corner half way through the first period.
The visitors came out in the second half obviously determined to redress the balance and although they had the better of the first 20 minutes they could not capitalize on their position although David Head had the best chance to put his side level when he had a free header which he put well wide.
As the half progressed the Wares edged back into the game and really had the better chances to increase their lead although Darren ‘Bomber’ Bonfield in the home goal made a superb save with just a few minutes left on the clock when Stuart Bardly’s fierce volley was palmed out by the big keeper.
After the game Joint Edgware Town boss Steve Newing said: “I’ll go as far as to say that whoever finishes above Sudbury will win the league. We’re under no illusions – this is a step up but all you can do is to keep performing”.
Edgware: Bonfield, Davidson, Hart, Hayden, Lewis, Smith, White(Salih), Moore, S.Blackburne(Brady), Ngoyi(Cain), Maharjan.
Other Subs: Ingham, R Blackburne
The win puts Edgware level on points with AFC Sudbury at the top of the table the teams only separated by the Yellows superior goal difference, but the Wares have two games in hand. At the end of the game news filtered through that Bury Town had been held to a draw at home against Redbridge in the preliminary round of the FA Trophy meaning the Wares game against Bury on Tuesday had to be postponed. The game has been re-arranged for Tuesday 27th November the first available date in a busy few weeks for the club.
