Edgware dominated for long parts of the game showing some of the best passing football we have seen this season. The visitors, who had not been beaten since their defeat by Canvey Island at the turn of the year, a run of 13 games, started using long ball tactics to try and bypass the Wares strong midfield. The visitors paid the price for their tough tackling and finished the game with 10 men after Leli Bajada was shown red 75 minutes in.
The visitors had the first shot at goal when Bradly Barnes corner was skied over Rob Blackburne’s goal by Glen Golby. However, it didn’t take the Wares long to get into their stride. Adil Salih lofted the ball in to Greg Ngoyi who headed wide 7 minutes in and a couple of minutes later a run at goal by Denis Maharajan was only thwarted on the edge of the area by some last ditch defending. Gavin Hart, returning to full duty after injury, was proving to be a thorn down the visitors left flank and when he won a corner for the Wares, it was set piece specialist Salih’s floated cross that forced the Millers keeper, Adam Rafis, to barge through a throng of players and punch the ball clear. Adam Wallace latched onto the loose ball and fired it back into the area inches too far in front of Ngoyi running in at the far post.
However, it was the visitors who scored first when Barnes combined with Wayne Vaughan down the left, Edgware’s stalwart defender Jason Ferneé was forced to concede a corner, it was from the resultant kick that Christian Wheeler scored, heading past Blackburne on the quarter hour.
Edgware were straight back on the counter and Maharajan’s volley from 20 yards hit the crossbar, but it was Hart who picked out Ngoyi in front of goal, the lithe strikers turn fooled substitute Ryan Doyle and his blistering shot hit the back of the net to level the scores with 18 minutes gone.
The visitors were becoming rougher with there tackles and when Richard Morton was brought down 6 yards outside the Millers area Fergus Moore free kick was just over the crossbar. Minutes later Morton was again brought down and this time Hart found Ngoyi who turned his marker and fired at goal, it was only Rafis’s quick reaction that averted a goal palming the ball onto the bar and over 25 minutes in.
Edgware were getting plenty of possession through midfield and were stringing together combinations of passes, the Millers reverted to firing long balls over midfield but to little effect. With 40 minutes gone Wallace made a surging run into the visitor’s area and was clearly brought down, but referee Mr Field waved away the Ware’s appeals, perhaps the only error in what was a peerless performance by the referee.
The second half saw more of the same with the Wares having long periods of possession and occasional forays forward by the visitors. But we had to wait until 6 minutes past the hour for the Wares hard work to pay off. Richard Morton who had worked tirelessly throughout worked the ball to Salih and his shot was turned in at the far post by Fergus Moore much to the delight of his teammates. At the other end Sam Holloway had the best chance to put the visitors level again but he missed Nick Whettner’s cross at the far post when clear in on goal.
The visitors frustration at chasing shadows was starting too tell and 75 minutes in Bajada grabed hold of young Michael McKay and threw him to the ground, as he had already been booked he received a second yellow and was sent from the field.
Edgware were coasting home when they took their eye off the ball and allowed Kye Ruel to run through the back line and score to level the scores again on 90 minutes. It looked like we were heading for a draw and Aveleys 14th game undefeated but the Wares had other ideas and when Morton headed forward a corner 3 minutes into time added on substitute Stuart Blackburne fired past Rafis to take the three points.
