Edgware Town (0)1 – Brentwood Town (0)1

Ryman Isthmian League

Division One North
Saturday 24th November 2007

Edgware and Brentwood shared the spoils in this clash of two sides who were promoted from step 5 as champions last season writes Gavin Shaw.

Disastor struck early on when Edgware’s Denis Maharjan had to be substituted in the first few minutes of the game, falling awkwardly and injuring his shoulder, Fabio Valenti came on in his place.

In a very tight first period neither side could take advantage, Johnny Moore came closest for the home side while Craig Gillam, for the visitors, forced Wares Darren Bonfield to make a fine save when he went one on with the big keeper.

The second period was a lot more open affair with the action swinging from one end to another. Jonnny Moore and Paul Marks were marshalling the midfield and with Adam Wallace back in the side, as a target man up front, the Wares looked more dangerous than of late. However, it was the ‘Blues’ who  took the lead just past the hour, Steve King with a powerful drive.

Edgware pushed forward in search of an equalizer and were rewarded on 74 minutes when Ben Hayden’s deft header found Ben Cain who made no mistake netting from close range.

Brentwood nearly grabbed all 3 points just before the end of the game, Gavin Hart saving off the line and then Terry Gillam’s pile driver acrobatically push aside by Darren Bonfield to keep the scores level at the end.

EDGWARE: Bonfield, Salih, Hart, Smith, Hayden, Ferneé, Marks(Morton), Moore, Ngoyi(Cain), Wallace, Maharjan(Valenti)

OTHER SUBS: Ingham, Blackburne

Edgware go back to top spot courtesy of next Tuesdays opponents at the White Lion, Bury Town, beating Dartford 2 – 1 away from home and AFC Sudbury having no game. The top eight clubs are now only separated by 4 points with Brentwood Town and Ware outside this group but with a number of games in hand. Exciting times ahead.
