Referee Rob Mackay somehow
managed to conjure up five added minutes of stoppage time to
allow Bury to snatch victory away from Edgware on Tuesday night
with virtually the last kick of the match.
Not that Bury didn't deserve a point, they most certainly did.
But they received ample assistance from the official to get it.
Whether that was enough to justify Steve Newing throwing
something of a tantrum at the final whistle is debatable, but
Edgware's joint manager seems certain to find himself in hot
water with the FA as a result, having already been sent off at
half time for voicing his frank opinion on a first half of
decisions from Mr Mackay which varied from the curious to the
quite unbelievable.
As for the game itself, it was far from being one of Edgware's
better performances as the Division's draw specialists looked to
halt a five match run without a league win.
They began brightly enough and, in the opening minutes, a point
blank range header by Ben Hayden, from Fabio Valenti's corner,
was somehow saved by Bury keeper Dean Greygoose.
However, it was not long before the Wares were ahead. Kevin
Chakaodoza, in his debut after being signed from AFC Hayes, had
a fierce shot blocked on the line from Adil Salih's fourth
minute cross, and Johnny Moore followed up to rifle the rebound
home.
But Bury swiftly showed they posed a threat, with Sam Reed's
strike deflecting off Hayden and looping over keeper Darren
Bonfield, and fortunately just over the bar, then Gavin
Johnson's cross-cum-shot from the left eluded the home defence
and came back off an upright.
And on 24 minutes the visitors drew level. A poor pass from Paul
Marks was picked off in midfield and Bury swept down the left,
where Sam Reed crossed to Lee Reed and he set up Stuart Walker
to shoot past Bonfield. After that the Wares went totally off
the boil, being hardly able to string more than two passes
together, and they were perhaps fortunate to still be level at
the break.
There were few signs of any improvement at the start of the
second half and, when Bonfield dropped the ball after failing to
hold onto Lee Reed's lofted free kick, the keeper had to plunge
down and block Sam Nunn's effort to net the loose ball.
Soon after Moore's goalline clearance from Nunn prevented
Edgware from going behind, and it was against the run of play
when the home side regained the lead on the hour, Adam Wallace
bundling home the ball from a fine right-wing cross by Salih.
Edgware settled a little after that, and even went close to
adding to their advantage as Hayden put a free header wide of
the target, while Richard Morton's shot, after a good exchange
with Ben Cain, forced a fumbled save from Greygoose.
But with Bury being comfortably held, Edgware were seemingly
heading towards a first league win from their last six games.
However, deep into an unwarranted period of stoppage time, the
inevitable happened as Stephen Bugg's snap shot from 20 yards
beat the unsighted Bonfield and cruelly went in off an upright
to give Bury a last-gasp equaliser.
Wares kicked off and Mr Mackay, as expected, promptly blew up
for full time.
The outcome, as well as raising Mr Newing's blood pressure by
several degrees, also cost the Wares leadership of Ryman League
One North, Dartford's 7-2 trouncing of Witham taking them to the
top of the table.
Better things will be required from Edgware on Saturday when
they visit much improved Great Wakering Rovers.
