Edgware bounced back after their defeat on Saturday to take all three points from a tough Northwood side and return to 5th place in the league.
‘Man of the match’, Denis Maharajan was on fantastic form and when he showed his heels to the visiting defenders early on it was only the sticky surface that denied him a shot at goal, the ball catching under his feet.
Northwood put the Wares under pressure in the first ten minutes but is was the home side that drew first blood. A great combination of passes between Paul Marks and Kevin Chakaodza put Maharajan clear and his wicked cross set Adam Wallace up to beat Mitch Swain in the ‘woods’ goal 12 minutes into the half.
Vince Rispoli was again making inroads into the visitors defence and his 25yard cross into the box found Chakaodza, but the big striker’s header was collected by Swain on the quarter hour. For the visitors Michael Gordon was posing the greatest threat in midfield but all too often he was foiled by the Edgware defenders. Although missing ‘Skipper’ Rory Smith, we saw the debut of Craig McKay who along with Fergus Moore and Jason Ferneé, coped ably with the Northwood attacks.
Early in the second half Northwood had their best chance of levelling when Sean Sonner, recently signed from Harefield, charged down a hasty clearance but fired the ball well over the crossbar with only Rob Blackburne to beat. Moments later Sonner again put Abdul Yoki clear bur he was flagged offside.
The Wares dominated for most of the remainder of the game, some really crisp passing from Dave Taylor and Adil Salih’s forward runs causing concern to the defenders. But it was the passing through midfield and the hard work of the forwards that gave the Wares the edge and although Northwood threw everything forward in the last minutes Edgware’s back line did not break.
