Edgware reached the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup, in an ill-tempered cup tie at the White Lion Ground this afternoon.

They say that familiarity breeds contempt, and these two sides who had met previously just four weeks ago on the opening day of the new season played out a cup tie that at times threatened to boil over as tempers frayed on an Indian summer’s day

The ‘Scholars’ started the brighter, forcing a number of corners, however, none of which troubled Rob Blackburne in the home goal.

Ben Hayden was floored in the first of a series of niggling incidents which kept referee Roger Hodges on his toes throughout the afternoon.

On 23 minutes Edgware captain Paul Marks was felled inside the area to hand the ‘Wares’ their first spot kick of the season, Chris Ingham took over the duty with regular penalty taker Richard Morton still sidelined, Ingham’s shot was weak and Ashley Jones diving low to his right saved without difficulty and beat Ingham to the ball to deny the defender a chance of a rebound.

Edgware did not let this setback affect them as they began to stamp their authority on the match, they were rewarded on 34 minutes when Gavin Hart sent over a perfect cross from the left wing which was met by Adam Wallace who simply placed it past Jones from close range to give the ‘Wares’ the lead which they took in to the interval.

The second period like the first was an edgy affair with chances few and far between for both sides, however Edgware always looked the more likely to add to their lead, though Potters Bar on two occasions broke free and saw chances go begging across the face of the home goal. A fine volleyed effort from Johnny Moore sailed over the bar as Edgware went in search of a second goal to seal the win.

The introduction of Steve Brady late on, provided extra pace down the right, and it was in time added on at the end of the 90, that Brady tore down the right wing, and delivered an inch perfect ball for Stuart Blackburne, to send not only the ball into the back of the Potters Bar net, but Edgware into the draw for the 2nd Qualifying round which will take place at the FA Headquarters in Soho Square on Monday.

Edgware are next in action when they host Tilbury in a Ryman League Division 1 North match, next Saturday.
