Edgware Town (1)1 – Redbridge (1)1

Ryman Isthmian League
Division One North

Honours were even at the White Lion Ground on Saturday when Edgware came up against a big, well organized, Redbridge side.  The Wares were on the attack early on, but, it was the ‘Motormen’ who dominated the first half, Dave Collins and Billy Holland both had chances, with big Ware’s keeper Darren Bonfield pushing over Holland’s shot 12 minutes in and then it was the quick thinking of Edgware captain Rory Smith to clear when Collins hit the crossbar and the ball rebounded in front of goal.

The visitor’s pressure paid off when they took the lead on 14 minutes, Frank Curley following up a deflected shot, the first goal the Wares had conceded in six league matches.

Edgware did have some chances, in fact they had the ball in the net just before the half hour when Junior Lewis’s powerful header hit the back of the net from a superb Fabio Valenti free kick, however, referee, Mr Crysell, disallowed the goal as Valenti took the kick before his whistle.

The Wares did draw level just 10 minutes later when Gavin Hart’s cross from the left was turned in from close range by Lewis to restore parity. Edgware rallied in the last 15 minutes and Valenti almost put the home side ahead on the close of the first half when his rasping shot went inches over the visitor’s crossbar.

The second period was better for Edgware although within 5 minutes of the restart the visitor’s keeper, Tony Tucker, had to be stretchered off after a clash in the goalmouth.

Densil Davidson was causing the visitors defenders a number of problems with his mazy runs down the right wing and Stuart Blackburne with Valenti combined well in the centre. Jason Ferneé put in a number of long throws one of which gave Johnny Moore a real chance 10 minutes past the hour but the fierce midfielder headed weakly at the keeper.

Holland was always a threat on the counter and the referee gave the visitors a number of free kicks for what appeared to be innocuous challenges, however, the score line remained the same till the final whistle.

The result was a fair one and with results elsewhere going in Edgware’s favour it was a point that keeps the early season pacesetters top of the league.
