Edgware took top spot in the league going into the New Year with a 2-0 win over Waltham Abbey this afternoon. The Abbots were one of only two teams that have beaten the Wares in the league this season, so the victory was even sweeter.
The visitors won a free kick 15 yards outside the area in the first minute of the game but the lively Denny Webb was wide of the target with a well struck shot and a few minutes later James Elmes put his effort over the bar of Rob Blackburne’s goal.
The home team were struggling to get off the blocks and it was a full 15 minutes before Paul Marks forced a save from Marcin Cichowlas, custodian of the visitors goal.
Although still depleted by injuries it was good to see Richard Morton returning to the side after a long lay off and it was Morton’s fierce drive, set up by Adam Wallace, that was just wide 18 minutes in. A couple of minutes later the big midfielder tried again, this time set up by Johnny Moore, forcing the visitors defence to concede a corner. Gavin Hart lofted the ball in to the area and it was staunch defender Jason Ferneé who rose above his marker, but headed over just past 20 minutes.
Chris Ingham was holding position in the back line and it was his swift reaction that saved the day when Richard Veares cross gave Louis Collins a site on goal and it was Veares again who gave Collins possibly his teams best chance of the half but the ball was too far in front of him.
With almost half an hour gone Kevin Chakadoaza set Wallace free forcing a save from Cichowlas and from his clearance Collins fired at Blackburne. However, it was Densil Davidson’s swift foray on the wing, passing in to Marks who slotted the ball to Chakadoaza for the hit man to score on 33 minutes.
Ingham again saved the day late into the first half heading the ball off the line and almost on the whistle Morton again hit a thunderbolt at goal, scraping the crossbar.
Straight into the second half Davidson again cut a swathe through the defence crossing to Wallace in the centre but the big striker seemed to lose his footing and shot weakly at goal. Moore won a corner just past the hour and Ingham was unlucky to hit the keeper when he blasted the ball at goal.
Abbey were still dangerous trying to break down the Wares defence and Ayres and Collins were combining well without being able to deliver the final strike, however with 72 minutes gone Collins did get a chance, only to see his shot hit the upright and bound out to safety.
The Wares wrapped up the game and the 3 points when Moore laid the ball for Wallace to strike and make it 2-0 with 10 minutes left. The Abbots tried to the end but Edgware held firm to see out the remainder of the half.
