Draw
specialists Edgware extended their unbeaten league run to 10
matches on Tuesday with a good point against a Ware side much
fancied for honours - but with more clinical finishing the
return could have been greater writes John Comfort, Sports
Editor of the Harrow Observer.
Edgware have proved a difficult side to beat this season,
witness the clean sheets they have kept in their last seven
games, but that statistic is in stark contrast to the drought
being experienced at the business end of the park, where a
meagre average of one goal a game during their current fine run
is less than impressive.
Tuesday's clash was a case in point for, while sound defending,
notably from Jason Ferneé, who had a particularly outstanding
game, kept the crisp passing attacks of Ware in check, Edgware's
own forays forward lacked the same fluency.
Chances were few and far between. However, the home side did
squander the best of those in the first half when Adam Wallace
blazed wildly over in sight of goal after being set up by
Richard Morton.
In the closing minutes of the half Morton himself was just off
target with a low strike, while Kevin Chakaodza's attempted chip
shot, after being set up by Steve Brady, lacked the required
height to clear keeper Luke Woods, who saved comfortably.
In the second half it was a similar story, but Edgware did have
a let off when Dave Blower's free kick from the halfway line
glanced off the head of Johnny Moore on the edge of the home
area and into the path of John Frendo just five yards out.
However, Fernee's robust challenge did enough to force the Ware
marksman to shoot over the bar.
As they had done in the first half, it was Edgware who carved
out the best scoring opportunity midway through the half - and
fluffed it. Brady exchanged passes with Chakaodza on the right
and his cross found the unmarked Morton but, from 10 yards out,
the Wares skipper blazed wildly over the inviting goal.
Fresh legs in the shape of Stuart Blackburne and Greg Ngoyi were
brought on by Edgware in the latter stages in an effort to break
the deadlock but it was the visitors who finished the game
stronger.
They could have snatched it when Frendo fired wide from close
range after being put through by Danny Spendlove and, in the
final minute, the same player headed straight at Rob Blackburne
from a Stevens cross.
However, the draw was a fair result, and one which lifted
Edgware back to second place in the Division One North table,
only behind leaders AFC Sudbury on goal difference, although the
Wares have played one game more than their rivals.
