Edgware posted another draw away at Burroughs Park against Great Wakering Rovers this afternoon, giving away their single goal lead to a basic defensive error five minutes before the end of the game.
Edgware started well, playing up the slight slope and against a stiffening wind. The managers playing three up front for the first time this season, obviously with an eye on scoring more goals. Man of the match Adam Wallace shaved the far post of the home goal in the first couple of minutes and the stocky forward was only a fraction away from turning in a Gavin Hart cross minutes later.
The Rovers would be no pushover, although only holding a mid table position they came into this game after a 4-4 draw against Arlesey Town on Tuesday and a 3–0 trouncing of Redbrige the previous Saturday.
Darren Bonfield was tested by Neil Richmond, 10 minutes in, when he volleyed Jeff Shepherds cross at goal, the big keeper also saved well when Bradley Smart headed in a long cross.
At the other end Harts corner was headed just over by Ben Hayden and following a neat move by Stuart Blackburne and new striker Kevin Chakaodza, Hart’s shot was inches over the crossbar. Wallace crossed into the area but Chakaodza was just short of latching on, with 20 minutes gone.
Although missing top scorer Martin Tuohy the Rovers were strong on the counter attack. Richmond’s shot was cleared off the line on the half hour, Shepherd shot wide and it was only the quick reaction of Ben Hayden that saved the day when he blocked Richmond’s fierce volley, the ball bouncing up into the grateful arms of Bonfield. Rovers James White was shown a yellow card following a vicious tackle on Paul Marks and James Foy’s shot was easily collected by Bonfield just before the end of an intense first half.
If the home side shaded the first half the second period went to the visitors. Blackburne had a rasping shot turned over for a corner by Louis Green in the visitor’s goal in the first minutes of the second half. Hart swung the ball into the centre and Marks was unlucky to have his shot blocked. Wallace put Johnny Moore through but he fired wide and Wallace again fed Densil Davidson who gave Blackburne a chance hitting the ball on the turn all in the first 10 minutes.
It was another pin point cross from Hart that gave Edgware the lead, Chakaodza on hand to open his account beating Green a minute past the hour. The Wares went for the second goal and Moore, Blackburne and Wallace all had chances.
The closest the home side came to a fight back was when Steve Butterworth hit the side netting after he collected a long free kick outside the area.
With just 5 minutes remaining it looked like Edgware would collect their first 3 points since the end of October but the Wares defence took their eye off the ball and when Bonfield pushed a lofted cross wide Sam Clarke was free to head in from the left leaving the keeper stranded. Edgware still had enough fight left to win the game and it was Wallace who had the best chance, moments before the end,but his shot was high and the team had the long journey home with only a point once more.
EDGWARE: Bonfield, Davidson(Brady), Hart, Ingham, Hayden, Ferneé, Marks, Moore, Chakaodza(Rispoli), Wallace, S.Blackburne(Cain)
OTHER SUBS: R.Blackburne, Christie
With other results keeping the Wares in second place, we have a chance to go into Christmas still holding a playoff position, which is really some achievement from our boys. Edgware now return to Arlesey Town for a League Cup fixture on Tuesday night before hosting Witham Town at the White Lion next Saturday.
