Edgware Town players were forced to arrive in a convoy of supporters cars after their mini-bus broke down on the M25. The Wares hit trouble just after Junction 27 when a front tyre blew forcing the bus off the road. Things went from bad to worse when they discovered the spare had been stolen from under the bus, the cradle having been cut through.
Given only half an hour to prepare, the team struggled through the first half but held on against their in-form opponents to see out the period, not really forcing any advantage but without conceding a goal. The back line was again marshaled by Edgware ‘skipper’ Rory Smith who seems to have come back from long term injury fitter than ever, Ben Hayden was a tower of strength at the back with Chris Ingham battling hard.
There must have been some choice words in the half time team talk because it was a different Edgware that came out in the second half. The ‘Blues’ became more physical as the half progressed and Edgware started to take the upper hand, however, credit must be given to the referee Mr. David Buck for his excellent control of what could have become a difficult game.
Gavin Hart and Densil Davidson were always a threat with their pace on the wings and Johnny Moore was the powerhouse controlling the midfield. However, it was with just twenty minutes left that Edgware had the best chance of taking the points when Stuart Blackburne broke through the home sides defense having only Darren Gould in the Blues goal to beat but the lithe striker tamely hit his shot straight at the prostrate keeper and the chance was gone.
Not very entertaining but a battling performance by Edgware who’s supporters made up over half of the 60 plus spectators. The Wares stay at the top of the table with AFC Sudbury who also took a point from their 1 – 1 draw away at Tilbury.
After the game joint boss Steve Newing commented “On reflection not a bad result given the circumstances of the day with the team arriving in dribs and drabs and only half an hour to prepare for the game. We have played 3 sides that were in the playoffs last season without conceding a goal and both Del and I are pleased with the way things are going.” He added “We have had a little bit of luck and been relatively injury free with key players remaining fit and we believe there is no reason why we can’t compete at this level”
