Edgware Town opened their new season with an impressive performance against a very physical Potters Bar side. Denis Maharjan, returning to the Wares after a long layoff through injury was the 2 goal hero of the hour and but for a wicked deflection from ‘scholars’ Aron Gonzales strike in the last moments of the game, Rob Blackburne, in the visitors goal, would have kept a clean sheet.
Edgware took the game to their opponent right from the first whistle, winning a corner in the first two minutes, Gavin Harts floated cross was headed down and just wide by Ben Hayden a couple of minutes later Adam Wallace’s incisive pass to Stuart Blackburne bounced up just at the wrong moment and the lithe striker could only hit the ball over the crossbar. Maharajan’s strong tackling through the centre set Blackburne up again 10 minutes later and he cheekily tried to lob the ball over the advancing Ashley Jones in the home goal.
The home side did try to crack the Wares defense that was ably marshaled by Junior Lewis and although the game was constantly disrupted by referee Mr Watson blowing up for free kicks, although not booking the perpetrator, it was the passing game of the Wares that was dominating the play.
The talking point of the match came 8 minutes past the half hour. Blackburne made a jinxing run at the home defenders and was clearly pulled back and then felled to the floor inside the box, incredibly Mr Watson gave a goal kick. At this point he decided to get his book out and showed a yellow card to Wares captain Paul Marks and Stuart Blackburne for dissent when questioning his decision.
Just 6 minutes after the break Edgware were in front, Maharajan won a corner and was on the end of Harts crossed ball to fire into the bottom left hand corner of Jones goal. Johnny Moore was a powerhouse in the centre and combined with Hart to give Adam Wallace a chance that skimmed the post.
Duane Jackman tested keeper Blackburne with a fizzer that he had to turn behind for a corner just before the hour. However,at the other end a ball crossed into the area found Maharajan who blasted a header past Jones for his second.
The game was getting a little heated as the home team tried to break down the Wares and it was minutes before the end that Gonzales strike took a deflection off a defenders boot and fouled Blackburne to give the home side a life line. More controversy before the end when substitute Ricky White was pushed away when trying to prevent a quick free kick, he pushed back and was promptly red carded by the referee, spoiling what was in every other way a good result for Edgware. Man of the match was Ben Hayden who’s presence in defense was outstanding.
