Isthmian League Cup
Third Round
Tuesday 23rd October 2007

Edgware made it 3 out of 3 tonight beating Potters Bar for the third time this season in this third round of the League Cup.

The Wares started slowly and seemed to be a little off the pace with the scholars making some telling runs at the visitors defence and it was to be from a free kick that they scored the opener, Victor Renner lofting the ball into the area for the unmarked Craig Braham to head home with just 13 minutes on the clock.

Edgware responded well and new signing Fabio Valenti ran the ball all the way to the byline before crossing into the box where Stuart Blackburne’s shot flew wide of the far post 26 minutes in.

The home side were getting into good positions but were lacking when it came to finishing and they were punished for their mistakes when Ricky White showed his blistering pace down the right wing and crossed in for Paul Marks to blast the ball into the roof of the net to bring the scores level in the 35th minute.

The action was thick and fast as the two sides battled for possession, Braham had another chance which he put over the bar and a defensive error by the Wares back line allowed Sam Adejokun to set up Darryl Wilson, but again they could not finish and his shot went wide just before the 40 minute mark.

Edgware mounted another attack and it was midfield maverick Johnny Moore who scored Edgware’s second with a scorching shot from the edge of the area that left home keeper Ashley Jones rooted to the spot a few minutes from the end of the first half. But the Wares weren’t finished yet and a great run by Stuart Blackburne set up Ben Cain to score the visitors third a minute from the whistle.

Right from the start of the second period the Wares were looking for more goals and Whites weak effort was followed up by Cain who hit the keeper from point blank range, the ball rebounding for a corner 3 minutes from the restart, just a couple of minutes later Valenti hit a superb 35 yard kick from the left touchline that went inches wide of the far post.

The home side were making the occasional sortie forward, Darryl Wilson had a couple of efforts but again lacked any imagination and rarely troubled Edward Stopps, from the youth squad, who was custodian of the Wares goal tonight.

With 15 minutes left Edgware won a free kick 30 yards out and White stepped up to take it. The burly forward noticed that Jones was off his line and swung the ball goalwards in a long arc which went straight in at the far corner much to the keepers astonishment. Five minutes later he almost repeated the feat this time from even further out and Jones was lucky to palm the ball away from the corner of his goal to save further embarrassment.

In the dying moments the scholars had there best chance to save a little face when a corner found Adejokun free in the centre of goal but he headed the ball down at the ground only to see it rebound over the crossbar which really sums up the home teams goal attempts during the 90 minutes of play.
