Pre Season Friendly
Edgware Town 1 - 1 Wealdstone
Steve
Newing has never ever scored against Wealdstone, but he missed a golden
opportunity of rectifying that in the final minute of Tuesday's friendly
against Edgware's former White Lion Ground tenants when he put a free
header well wide of the target writes John Comfort.
However, the now corpulent joint Wares boss, who came on as a late
substitute, could not complain about the final outcome as the draw was a
fair result of a competitive match against rivals who were some way
short of being at full strength.
Edgware
took
the lead on 26 minutes when a long throw in from Adil Salih saw Stones'
trialist keeper Dan Carr flap at the ball, allowing Junior Lewis to net
from close in.
Keeper Rob Blackburne, who had a good game, came to his side's rescue
when he tipped over a close range effort from Dean Papali, but he should
have been beaten soon after when Papali broke clear only to put a low
effort wide of goal.
Paul Marks had the chance to add to Edgware's lead when a poor defensive
header set him up with a good scoring opportunity on the edge of the
Wealdstone area, but he drilled his shot aimlessly wide.
Blackburne again excelled just before the break, superbly saving a good
effort from Ben Alexander and then blocking Josh Cooper's angled drive
away for a corner.
However, it took Wealdstone just 11 minutes of the second half to
eventually draw level. Chris Owens crossed from the left, Fergus Moore
nodded the ball past Blackburne at the far post and Papali was on hand
to ensure it crossed the line, lashing it into the roof of the net.
After that both sides had chances to win it, with Carr redeeming himself
for his earlier error by blocking Stuart Blackburne's close range effort
and then superbly saving later when the Edgware striker broke clear.
At the other end the legs of Edgware's youth team keeper Stopps, who
replaced Rob Blackburne, thwarted Seye Adegoke when he homed in on goal.
With time almost up Newing blew his big chance from a fine cross by
Craig Tomkins, and it ended with honours even.
