A lacklustre display saw early season pacesetters Edgware Town drop their first points of the new season, going down to a single goal defeat at Waltham Abbey this afternoon.

Coming off the back of a resounding five goal victory at the weekend, the ‘Wares’ had to make enforced changes, as midfield powerhouse Johnny Moore, centre half Ben Hayden, and forward Adam Wallace were all sidelined, Jason Ferneé slotted into the back three, Ricky White moved in the centre of midfield and Greg Ngoyi started in place of Wallace in attack.

The first half was a dour affair for spectators of both sides in a bank holiday crowd of 141 with little goalmouth action from either side.

Edgware found it difficult to break down a resolute ‘Abbots’ defence, the closest they came to breaking the deadlock was when Dennis Maharajan twice shot from distance on both occasions the ball went just wide of the far post.

Rob Blackburne in the 'Wares' goal had to be alert to push a good effort behind the post and in first half stoppage time Denzal Davidson's solid run down the right flank, looked promising but his shot lacked power as it sailed past the far post, to leave the match goalless at the inteval.

The second period did little to improve matters, as Edgware resulted to long ball tactics, instead of their usual slick passing game, whether this was down to the length of the playing surface which appeared to have not been mowed in a while or a lack of imagination, the ‘Wares’ struggled to make any real impression in front of goal, barely testing the home keeper.

The 'Abbots' took the lead on the hour mark after a good move down their right, poor defending allowed the ball to be crossed to the far post where James Elmes finnished well from close range..

Edgware continued to push forward as they looked for an equaliser, but this was not to be their day and to compound to their woes, Junior Lewis was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the closing stages.

Edgware turn their attention to the FA Cup when they visit United Counties side Raunds Town for their next match on Saturday September 1st.
