Edgware Town came away with a point from a game that on current form should have given them three. However, the Waltham Forest team had obviously not read the form book and gave the Wares a run for their money at their Wadham Lodge ground this afternoon.
Edgware went in front in the first minute of the game when Fabio Valenti’s cross into the area was turned into goal by Junior Lewis. Valenti was again the instigator putting Stuart Blackburne free to set up Paul Marks in front of goal but the ball stuck under the feisty midfielder’s feet and he was unable to put any power in his shot that was collected by Jason Willis in the home goal.
The Stags had some real pace up front and when Obi Nene threatened to break through the Wares back line Rory Smith tackled well but had to concede a corner into the bargain. The kick was crossed into the centre where Stags Captain Ryan Oliva was left unmarked and his powerful header beat Darren Bonfield to put the home side level eight minutes in.
Junior Lewis headed against the bar just two minutes later and with 12 minutes gone Edgware had the ball in the net again, Densil Davidson’s cross headed in by Adam Wallace, but referee Mr Makay ruled Wallace offside and did not allow the goal.
Willis punched out a Blackburne effort and Valenti headed over, then Marks set up Valenti and the latter’s swerving shot forced the impressive Willis into a diving save just past the twenty minute mark.
The pace of Nene was a constant threat to the Wares defenders and on a foray forward, 27 minutes in, his cross found Emanuel Umeh free in the area but his shot was straight at Bonfield. At the other end Blackburne was clearly held back when he lost his marker and turned in on goal but the Wares free kick was collected by Willis just past the half hour.
It was on the break again that Umeh smashed the ball into a melee of players in front of the visitor’s goal, the ball crossed the line but so did Bonfield as he was bundled into his own goal, for the second time that afternoon Mr Makay disallowed the goal. Minutes before the break Umeh gave Danny Honeyball a chance but the ball was headed safely over the visitor’s goal.
The second half started with the Wares winning a number of corners but as the home side had all 11 players packing the area the visitors could gain no advantage. Forest were relying on long balls over the midfield being picked up by their fast front men.
A few minutes past the hour the visitors made a mistake in the back line and Shaun Evans beat Bonfield to net the ball but again the goal was ruled offside. Bonfield saved well when Nene had a shot on 70 minutes.
Both sides were canceling each other out. Edgware suffered a blow when team skipper Rory Smith was sent off for a second yellow offence. Now with 10 men the Wares made a last ditch effort to score a second but time and the performance of home keeper Willis defeated them.
However, with Dartford and Brentwood Town both loosing today Edgware hold second place to AFC Sudbury on goal difference but the Wares have a game in hand. The Wares travel away to Arlesey Town on Tuesday night before entertaining Brentwood Town next Saturday and Bury Town on Tuesday, both at the White Lion.
