Wivenhoe Town (0)0 – Edgware Town (1)2
Ryman Isthmian League

Division One North
Saturday 8th September 2007

Edgware may have not gone to the same lengths that St George did to slay the dragons, but they still managed to return with all three points from Wivenhoe this afternoon.

The ‘Wares’ made hard work of beating the bottom placed ‘Dragons’ and it was thanks to a second half double penalty save from the outstanding Rob Blackburne in the visitors goal, that Edgware sealed their fourth win from their opening five games.

Edgware started brightly enough, forcing a number of corners, and it was from one such corner that the lead was gained, Gavin Hart sent over a perfect ball from the right which was met at the far post by Stuart Blackburne, the lively striker latched on to the ball and sent a thunderous shot high into the back of net to send the ‘Wares’ 1-0 up on 19 minutes.

Further chances were created and Blackburne’s striking partner Greg Ngoyi was unlucky on a couple of occasions after being played in by Blackburne, Dennis Maharjan also saw an effort go just over as Edgware dictated play.

The home side did not offer much in the way of chances; however seconds before half time, a surging run and swerving shot resulted in Rob Blackburne making his first real save of note. Edgware went in at the break a goal to the good, although really they should have had a healthier lead.

The second half saw the ‘Dragons’ apply pressure on the Edgware goal, although creating mainly half chances, the ‘Ware’s defence were made to toil in an effort to keep their goal from being breached.

With 66 minutes gone, Wivenhoe were handed a gift when Junior Lewis appeared to upend a home player and the referee pointed to the spot. Steve Bourne stepped up to take the kick, however, Rob Blackburne guessed the right way and not only saved the initial shot, but also managed to turn the rebound away as well!

Moments later Rob Blackburne was again called upon to make an excellent save, this time diving at full stretch to his left to palm a header over his crossbar, with this the home side heads appeared to drop and Edgware went in search of a second goal to kill the match off.

Paul Marks saw his shot go just wide, and the introduction of Adam Wallace up front worried the home defence, but it was not until deep into stoppage time that Edgware made sure of securing the win, Wallace held the ball up well inside the area and unselfishly passed to Denzal Davidson at the far post who sent his shot crashing into the home net to send Edgware back home from Essex with all 3pts.

Edgware remain in 3rd place in the Ryman League Division 1 North, having taken 12pts from a possible 15.

The ‘Wares’ turn their attention to the FA Cup next Saturday when local rivals Potters Bar Town visit the White Lion Ground for a 1st Qualifying round tie.
